Parent to Parent Calling Program
Do you remember what it was like to be sending your child to Amherst for the first time? Some parents only recently experienced the first child to leave home; for some, the college experience is uncharted territory. While many parents and guardians are able to visit the campus, others are never able to visit New England and Massachusetts can sound very far away.
Would you enjoy sharing your experience as an Amherst parent with parents from your region whose sons or daughters are about to be first-year students here? Every year we look for volunteers to make phone calls to new families, to welcome them to Amherst and to answer the kinds of questions you probably had: what’s the best transportation from your area, what’s winter really like, how often did your child call home? We will provide you with a list of contact information (Dean of Students Office, Health Services, Public Affairs, the Career Center etc.) so you can direct people to the right place for more detailed information.
If you would like to participate in the summer of 2014, check back at this site in early summer 2014 to sign up. If you have questions, please email Kristen Ford, assistant director of on-campus programs in Alumni and Parent Programs.
Parents of current students also speak on a panel for the parents of new first-year students during Orientation. In 2014 the panel will be on Sunday, August 24 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Buckly Recital Hall. We always seek panelists whol represent a broad range of experiences, coming from different regions and backgrounds and with sons and daughters who have pursued different interests at Amherst. If you are interested in speaking on this panel, please email Marcy Larmon, director of classes and on-campus programs in Alumni and Parent Programs.
