Teaching Interests

I offer survey courses on the history of Western medicine, the history of science, and the history of science in America on a regular basis. I'm also a regular participant in the First-Year Seminar program, in which I've taught courses on the first era of globalization and on the history of evolutionary thought. In recent years, I've also taught the History department's proseminar for majors, "Writing the Past," as well as research seminars on science and the Cold War and on the history of the wonder drugs.

Awards and Honors

My book, Physical Chemistry from Ostwald to Pauling, received the History of Science Society's Pfizer Prize for best book in the history of science in 1991.

Scholarly and Professional Activities

I've served as Vice-President (2000-2001) and President (2002-2003) of the History of Science Society and am a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
