Academic and Research Interests

I received my B.A. from Yale in 1956 and my Ph.D. from Harvard in the History of American Civilization in 1967. I am the author of Woodrow Wilson and World Politics. At Amherst College, where I have been on the faculty since 1964, I teach courses in American diplomatic history, Israeli history, and nationalism/national identity.
