I teach courses on the history and culture of punishment, race, and the law in the United States. My research focuses on the relationship between racial inequality and state violence in American culture since the nineteenth century, with particular attention to incarceration. My work has appeared in J19: The Journal of Nineteenth-Century Americanists, and is forthcoming in American Literature and in Law, Culture, and the Humanities. I received my PhD in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 2015.
