Teaching Interests

I have enjoyed teaching all levels of Spanish for several years: basic and intermediate language acquisition courses, advanced writing and conversation, medical Spanish, and Spanish for heritage speakers, to upper division courses in literature, film, and cultural studies.

My primary goal is to provide my students with opportunities to achieve language proficiency through active communication, as well as cultural competence through the study of language and culture. To this goal, I use a communicative, content-based, student-centered approach in order to stimulate communication in its three modes—interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational—and to assess my students’ proficiency development in the target language. In my courses students explore culture in a variety of forms—art, music, literature, film, mass media—, as it is my goal to immerse them in the language and the culture, both inside the classroom and beyond its walls. Students have stated to me that they are drawn to the study of Spanish for the culture, the more practical benefits of the language aside. Therefore, students find value in both canonical works and popular culture: engaging with Latin American and Spanish short stories by celebrated authors, as well as with Mexican corridos, or Chicano murals.

Research Interests

My research focuses on 20th century Mexican literature and film. The core of my research interests and specialization is the Golden Age of Mexican cinema (ca. 1935-1955) as it relates to problems of representation during these significant decades of socioeconomic progress.

Among my current research projects is my book, Boundless Divas: Transnational Stars in Mexico’s Golden Age Cinema, which analyzes the central role often assumed by transnational actors in Mexican national cinema in post-revolutionary Mexico (reconstruction years to the late 1950s). My research contributes strongly to the development of my class curricula, as I incorporate film and literature in my pedagogy, not only as authentic Spanish-language texts, but also as texts that demand analysis of several aspects, such as written and visual language, historical context, and processes of distribution and consumption.
