John S. Middleton ’77 was appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2009 and has been the chairman of the buildings and grounds committee since 2012. In that capacity, he has overseen the Greenway Project from its inception. He is the managing partner and principal owner of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Middleton majored in economics at Amherst, graduating magna cum laude, and then earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1979. He and his wife, Leigh, gave Amherst’s Beneski Museum of Natural History a nearly complete skeleton of a Dryosaurus altus dinosaur, one of only two on display in the world. Among his alumni activities, Middleton was president of his class and honorary president of the college’s Society of Alumni from 2001 to 2002. He also served on the presidential search committee for President Martin. Amherst awarded Middleton its Medal for Eminent Service in 2004 in recognition of his dedication to the school.
