Former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, Chef and Restaurateur Alice Waters and France Finance Minister Christine Lagarde Among Eight to Be Honored at Amherst College Commencement May 22

** Editor’s Note: Christine Lagarde, who had been invited as an Honored Guest for Commencement Weekend, regrettably had to cancel her visit to the College. All other Commencement events will take place as scheduled. **

AMHERST, Mass.—John Abele ’59, founder of the Boston Scientific Corporation; Adam Falk, president of Williams College; Andrew Kendall ’83, president of the nonprofit Trustees of Reservations; Christine Lagarde, Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry for France; Gail Kern Paster, outgoing director of the Folger Shakespeare Library; Paul Volcker, former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank; Alice Waters, chef and restaurateur; and Kimmie Weeks ’05, founder and director of Youth Action International, will all receive honorary degrees from Amherst College during its 190th Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 22, at 10 a.m. on the school’s campus.

The 2007-08 winter season ended with two NESCAC titles, one national quarterfinal appearance, a pair of national runner-up finishes and 10 individual national championships. With the new winter season just getting underway, we now present eight athletes—four sophomores and four seniors—whom we expect to have breakout years.

Prom Night

By Emily Gold Boutilier Well after dark on the Friday after Valentine’s Day, a handful of students mill about in the lobby of Charles Pratt, the new first-year dorm. A band is playing, but no one is on the dance floor. Still, it’s early—only 10 p.m. And Katherine Black ’10, who organized the night’s Pratt Prom with her fellow RCs, isn’t worried. She doesn’t expect a crowd until 11 or 11:30.
