In a piece featuring Spanish professor James Maraniss and his brother David, the longtime Amherst faculty member had this to say about the much-anticipated production of the opera Life is a Dream, for which he wrote the libretto: “Not to sound pompous, but I feel now like I’ve been involved in something of lasting significance.”

A Dream Come True

[Opera] Lewis Spratlan, an emeritus professor of music, and James Maraniss, a Spanish professor, wrote an opera (Spratlan the music, Maraniss the libretto) in the late 1970s while living in adjacent apartments. Life is a Dream, based on the 17th-century Spanish play La vida es sueno, won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in Music (for Act II, concert version) but has never been performed in full. Until now. The opera will premiere this summer at the Santa Fe Opera,
