The Honors Program

In addition to the courses required for a rite major, candidates for the honors of distinction and high distinction in German Literature or German Studies must complete German 498 and present a thesis on a topic chosen in consultation with an advisor in the Department. The aim of Honors work in German is

(1) To consolidate general knowledge of the history and development of German language, culture, and history;

About the Major

Biology majors at Amherst study introductory Biology, Chemistry,and Math, Statistics, and/or Physics, and then have a wide choice of upper-level Biology courses to fulfill the major. Many Biology majors choose to do a senior honors research project culminating in a thesis and graduation with departmental honors in Biology.

Amherst graduates who majored in Biology usually go on to graduate or professional school, and have careers in such fields as medicine, research, teaching, or the business world.

Honors Requirements for Political Science

Honors Requirements

Students who wish to be considered for graduation with Departmental Honors in Political Science must have an A- cumulative average or higher after six semesters.  Prospective applicants should consult with members of the Department during their junior year to define a suitable Honors project and to determine whether a member of the Department competent to act as an advisor will be available to do so.

Information for Majors

Black Studies is an interdisciplinary exploration of the histories and cultures of black peoples in Africa and the diaspora. It is also an inquiry into the social construction of racial differences and its relation to the perpetuation of racism and racial domination.
