History of the Department

Anthropology was introduced to the Amherst College curriculum in 1964. Donald S. Pitkin's (Harvard Ph.D. Anthropology 1954) appointment to the faculty reflected a need for a comparative approach to bear upon a curriculum largely Euro-centric in orientation. The promise of a conjunction between anthropology and its sister discipline sociology was realized in 1968 with the appointment of Norman Birnbaum (Harvard Ph.D Sociology 1958) to the faculty. Birnbaum brought an urbane intellect and a critical sociological analysis to the new joint program.
