Laure Katsaros Receives Mellon New Directions Fellowship to Study Architectural Design

Associate Professor of French Laure Katsaros has received $262,500 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation through its New Directions Fellowship program, which exists to “assist faculty members in the humanities … who seek to acquire systematic training outside their own areas of special interest.” Katsaros’ award will support her in earning a master’s degree in the history and philosophy of design from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design in 2014–15, and in traveling around France to visit several distinctive architectural sites. Her goal is to produce a final project for the master’s program, and eventually a book, tentatively titled Glass Architectures: Utopian Surveillance from Fourier to the Surrealists.

National Fellowships and Scholarships

What are National Fellowships and Scholarships? Simply put, they are merit-based, highly competitive, opportunities funded by governments, individual philanthropists, and private organizations. The opportunities of this kind that we administer mainly fund travel, graduate study, or independent research abroad. One, however, funds graduate study in the U.S.; another supports research at a major think tank; and another rewards candidates for excellent work in the STEM fields. Each funding body has a mission.

Office of Fellowships

The Office of Fellowships advises Amherst College students and alumni on a number of competitive awards that can be applied to a variety of academic and other goals. For sophomores, juniors, seniors, and alumni, we administer competitions for externally funded, nationally competitive awards that require institutional endorsement of applicants.
