Music 9 and 10 have an end-of-semester recital. Extracurricular chamber groups may also perform in smaller informal recitals on campus.

The Music at Amherst series presents six concerts throughout the academic year, and brings in some of the world's premier artists. Students receive free tickets to these performances. For a full concert schedule, visit the Music at Amherst site.

Amherst College Jazz Combos

The combos are small groups of musicians who are dedicated to studying the great artists of jazz and carrying on their legacy through making innovative journeys into improvisation and small group playing. This prepares the group for life after college by exposing the combo to standard charts, techniques, and theory while encouraging each to create their own sound through tune selection, arrangement and/or use of original compositions.

For more info on each combo, please select from the menu to the left.

Please refer to UPCOMING PERFORMANCES for a complete schedule of remaining events during the 2013-2014 season.

Past Directors

Lanfranco Marcelletti

The Brazilian conductor and pianist Lanfranco Marcelletti was brought to the United States by the late Maestro Eleazar de Carvalho to study on a full scholarship at the Yale University School of Music.

Mark Lane Swanson (Music Director & Conductor, 2001-present)

Amherst College attracts many of the finest student instrumentalists who are interested in maintaining a balance between serious academics and high standards of musical performance. The instrumental program is designed to offer conservatory-like experiences--both in terms of ambitious repertoire and professional coaching and master classes--while recognizing that most of its students ultimately will be pursuing careers in law, medicine, business, and other professional fields of study.

A selection of our concert recordings will soon be available.
