AMHERST, Mass. — Ten recent Amherst College graduates have won J. William Fulbright Fellowships to study and teach abroad during the 2011–12 academic year.

A Record 12 Amherst Seniors or Recent Graduates Win Fulbright Fellowships

With the last-minute acceptance of another Amherst applicant, a record 12 seniors and recent graduates are among 1,500 U.S. citizens who have won J. William Fulbright Fellowships to study and teach abroad during the 2010-11 academic year. Previously the largest number of winners for the college was 10 during the 2008-09.

AMHERST, Mass. — Four more members of Amherst College’s Class of 2008 have received prestigious awards for study and teaching abroad during the 2008-09 academic year. Sarah Craver ’08, Robyn Pront ’08 and Erika Sams ’08 were awarded French Government Teaching Assistantships, while Amanda Gibson ’08 received a J. William Fulbright Fellowship.

Alison Bickford ’02, who majored in neuroscience at Amherst and is the daughter of Debbie Bickford and Robert Bickford of Birmingham, Ala., will study at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Endocrinology in Hannover, Germany. She will investigate the links between mind and body in the workings of circadian rhythms.

A graduate of Newton South High School, Phillips is the son of Russell and Elise Phillips of Newton, Mass. Phillips wrote in his application that he hopes to "explore the pedagogy behind the teaching of English in Taiwan... I believe these experiences might help me to better teach English."

William Fulbright Fellowship for postgraduate study overseas. Lee, the son of Kwang S. Lee and Young S. Lee of Fairfax, Va., will study the lives of the ethnic Koreans from the Soviet Far East whom Josef Stalin forcibly resettled into Uzbekistan in Central Asia in 1937.

William Fulbright Fellowship for postgraduate study overseas. Pfaffenroth, daughter of Peter and Sara Pfaffenroth of Chester, N.J., will study the shifting boundaries between “fine art” and “crafts” in Vienna around 1900.
