Amherst.edu Redesign 2015

April 10, 2015

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

This summer, we will launch a new Amherst College website, featuring a new academic focus, design, layout and organization. We know there are considerable demands on your time at this phase of the semester, and offer the following information only for those who are interested. We thought you might want to see the coming website before the semester ends. We are holding three open forums next week (listed below) for anyone who would like to learn more.

How to Locate Media Object - What webpages contain an image, movie or other file

If you are attempting to find out what Amherst College webpages contain a specific file, or find a file you have lost, you can use the media location feature, which is found here:

https://www.amherst.edu/media-getinfo

Go to the website address above then paste in any file location url that looks like this:

https://www.amherst.edu/system/files/[nameoffile]

Unix Network Space

By mapping drives (Windows) or mounting volumes (Mac), you can access Amherst network storage shares and manipulate files as if they were stored on your own computer. For many purposes, mapped network drives or mounted volumes provide a simpler way to manage files than using SFTP or SSH and Unix commands.

File Transfers in Windows

Transfering Files to the College Unix Computers

There are a number of ways to transfer files to the College Unix computers.

Mounting or mapping a network disk share allows you to transfer files simply by copying them. Learn more about that approach here.

How to use mm links

If you do not use mm links to content on the Amherst web site, the links may break if the page or content is moved.  To get the mm link for a page, click on the chain icon in the top right corner and copy the URL.
