The Astronomy Major

If you are thinking about majoring in Astronomy, you should go to the departmental office, Merrill 214, and ask to talk to Professor Loinaz. In the meantime, this page provides an outline of the requirements for a major. (The catalog is the official word on these matters, so read it, too.) 


Astronomy was the first science, and it remains today one of the most exciting and active fields of scientific research. Opportunities exist to pursue studies both at the non-technical and advanced levels.

Introductory courses are internal to Amherst College: advanced courses are offered under the aegis of the Five-College Astronomy Department, a collaboration between Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts. For more information, click here:
