Amherst Professors Reel in NSF, NIH Grants

Four faculty members at Amherst College—John-Paul Baird, Ethan Clotfelter, Michael Hood and Katharine Sims—have recently been awarded sizable research grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

The four professors will use their grants to work with students to continue researching brain circuitry, fish evolution, plant disease and environmental conservation, respectively. Below are brief descriptions of the grants and the research that will be supported.

Professor Jonathan Friedman Receives Grant for Research of Quantum Mechanical Effects in Single-Molecule Nanomagnets and Superconducting Devices

In the Merrill Science Center lab of Associate Professor of Physics Jonathan Friedman, you’ll find magnets consisting of only one molecule each and student researchers who custom-build much of their own equipment. With the support of a recent grant from the National Science Foundation, this summer the professor and his students are continuing their cutting-edge research of quantum mechanical effects in single-molecule nanomagnets and superconducting devices.

Amherst College Physics Professor David S. Hall Awarded Three-Year, $469K NSF Grant

AMHERST, Mass. – David S. Hall, associate professor of physics at Amherst College, has received a three-year, $469,086 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award will support Hall’s studies of gases cooled to a billionth of a degree above absolute zero—the lowest possible temperature in the universe—and will allow him to build on work done by legendary physicists Satyendra Nath Bose and Albert Einstein in the 1920s.

Amherst College Receives National Science Foundation Grant For High-Performance Networking

October 28, 2002 Director of Media Relations 413/542-8417 AMHERST, Mass.-The National Science Foundation has awarded Amherst College a grant of $150,000 to support the college's connection to the Internet2 networks and establish high-performance networking. Philip Fitz, director of information technology at Amherst, will lead a team of staff from the information technology department that will collaborate with faculty to establish Internet2 connectivity and put it to work in the college's research labs.
