The purpose of the liberal arts is to search for truth—no matter where such a quest leads—and it is the role of colleges to provide a safe place for students and faculty to do so, Amherst College President Biddy Martin reminded a standing-room-only crowd of faculty, staff and this year’s 477 new students in her annual Convocation address on Sept. 7.

Amherst College will welcome United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to Johnson Chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. for remarks and a question-and-answer session. Though the schedule for her visit to Massachusetts is very tight, she has generously included the College in her itinerary. The event will last for one hour and will be open on a first-come, first-served basis for Amherst College students, faculty and staff with a College ID. Please note: This event will start promptly at 7 p.m. and conclude promptly at 8 p.m.

Reddit co-found Alex Ohanian talks with students

Optimistic, energetic, inquisitive—Alexis Ohanian is everything you would expect a young Internet entrepreneur to be. He shared his optimism, energy and intellectual curiosity with an excited group of students and fans recently when he spoke in Johnson Chapel. Ohanian discussed his experience with founding the social news and entertainment website Reddit and other Web startups; the direction of Internet entrepreneurship; and his new book, Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed.
