Student Security/Safe R-I-D-E Student Security Assistants The Campus Police Department employs Amherst College students in various civilian capacities. Students perform clerical duties, assist with the enforcement of parking regulations, the patrolling of the campus, and the securing of college buildings. Although Student Security Assistants have no police authority, they are equipped with 2-way radios, which enable them to report instantly all incidents involving suspicious or criminal activity.
Amherst College police officers have been patrolling the campus, lots, bike paths and surrounding wooded areas on mountain bicycles since 1994. In 2008 the police added a Vectrix Electric Motorcycle to the patrol fleet.
The officers are easily identified as police officers with blue shorts or training pants and french blue long and short sleeve polo shirts. The polo shirts have an embroidered badge and the word "Police" on the back and the department patch on the sleeve.
Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act Report
As required by law, Amherst College has prepared a compliance document that contains the required information about campus security policy and certain campus crime statistics. In addition, the report includes information about fire safety, fire detection/suppression systems, and statistics of damage, injury, and death caused by fire.
Participate in the bicycle registration program! The program, an offshoot of Operation Identification, has greatly deterred bicycle theft on the Amherst College campus. To participate in the program bring your bicycle to the Campus Police office.
