International Careers

Why Go Abroad?

Amherst students may choose to work abroad for a wide variety of reasons. Some work abroad because they did not have a chance to study abroad during their academic career; others work abroad because their time abroad sparked an interest in working abroad. Some students choose to spend a summer working abroad before graduation; others choose to spend Interterm in a foreign country doing volunteer work or interning. Students may work abroad for the adventure, for the cultural experience, to improve language skills.

International Study & Work

Approximately 40% of Amherst students spend a semester or year abroad as part of their Amherst academic career.  Many students, even some that study abroad, also spend as summer, interterm, or even take a semester off to work abroad.  The international experience can bring a perspective to your time at Amherst and will influence your coursework, perhaps even direct a thesis topic.  You will grow personally and academically from your experiences abroad.  The Career Center can work with you to translate your international experiences to your resume
