Comprehensive Exam - Foundational Texts

This list seeks to offer a comprehensive view of Hispanic civilization from medieval and modern Spain, to Hispanic America and the Caribbean from pre-Columbian times to the present, and over four hundred years of Latinos in the United States. A student with a major in the Department of Spanish should be conversant, albeit not a specialist, with these canonical texts, many of which will have been contemplated in the classroom at some point in the student’s four-year tenure at Amherst College, and all available through the Five-College library system.

Study Abroad

Study abroad programs offer academically-rigorous courses of study and require a solid language foundation.  Spanish majors are strongly encouraged to pursue a homestay or a living arrangement with Spanish speakers while abroad.  Three courses, taught entirely in Spanish, may be counted for the major while studying abroad, with the exception of grammar or language courses and music or art practice courses.  At least one of the three courses must be a literature course.

My home for the next 4 years

Union College

I will be attending Union College in Schenectady, NY this fall as a member of the class of 2011. I have too many interests to choose an intended major at this time, but I am especially interested in Biology, Eastern Relgions, and Spanish (weird combination...I know).

I also love to run! While at Union, I hope to run for the cross-country and indoor/outdoor track teams.

I am Matthew Dennett Fernald, the third in the line of great Fernalds to attend this great college in the town Amherst of the state of Taxa - sorry, Massachusetts. My middle name can be seen on large, green signs for "Dennett Rd" if one is driving on I-95 across the bridge into Maine. In my remarkably uninformed opinion, Billy Joel is the greatest songwriter ever to have lived. I support the BoSox and Patriots and Roger Federer, though the latter is having a notably bad year so far. My hair is the color of milk chocolate, my skin the color of a peanut.

Spanish Writing Center - Fall 2013 & Spring 2014

The Spanish Writing Center is open.  Writing Fellows will be available to assist upper-division students enrolled in Spanish culture courses, and language courses (SPAN 140 and SPAN 199) with Spanish-language writing projects.
