Aid for First-Year and Transfer Students

Your educational objectives should be the most important factors in choosing a college, but the cost of attendance may also be a major consideration for you and your family. Amherst College is committed to making financial aid available to all students with financial need so that cost does not become the determining factor in making a decision about Amherst. For this reason, you should not be afraid to apply for admission to Amherst because of financial need.

Amherst College is “need blind” meaning: applying for financial aid will have no bearing on the admission application process. This "need blind" admission policy applies to all applicants, domestic and international.

The College has a comprehensive program of financial aid that provides assistance in the form of scholarships and grants, loans, and student employment. In the 2023-24 academic year, Amherst students received need-based financial aid totaling more than $76,000,000 from all sources. Need based aid included:

Scholarships and Grants:$ 57,700,000 received by 57 percent of students
Loans:$ 2,400,000 received by 22 percent of students
Student Employment:$1,500,000 received by 70 percent of students
