Conference - Minorities and Minority Discourses in Germany since 1990

Amherst College will be hosting a Five College conference about migrants, minorities, and current affairs in Germany. It also takes place at UMass (Friday) and at Hampshire College (Sunday). The speakers are from all over the country and two of our own students will read papers on Saturday. Please view link for details. We hope to see many of you there!

Karbid und Sauerampfer

German Film Series: "Karbid und Sauerampfer"

Two screenings, at 4 and 7:30 p.m.

"Carbide and Sorrell" (Frank Beyer, 1963; 85 min.)
Historical East German comedy: in the summer of 1945, Kalle Bluecher (Erwin Geschonneck) sets out to deliver several barrels of carbide to a factory in Dresden, dodging Soviet occupation officers, land mines, and love-crazed widows along the way.

Labyrinth of Lies

German Film Series: "Im Labyrinth des Schweigens"

Two Screenings, at 4 and 7:30 p.m.

"Labyrinth of Lies" (Giulio Ricciarelli, 2014; 122 min.)
Award-winning drama based on real events: in 1950’s West Germany, a young idealistic public prosecutor (Alexander Fehling) encounters resistance and obstructionism as he tries to bring perpetrators of the Holocaust to justice.

Screening co-sponsored by Amherst College Office of the Jewish Religious Advisor. Shown in conjunction with the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival.

German Film Series: "Comedian Harmonists"

Two screenings, at 4 and 7:30 p.m.

"Comedian Harmonists" (Joseph Vilsmaier, 1997, 127 min.)
Set in the 1920s and 1930s, the true story of an a-capella singing group famous for catchy and witty tunes, whose sensational success was cut short by Hitler because some members of the troupe were Jewish.
