Nathaniel “Nate” Dickinson died gracefully at St. Peter’s Hospice in Albany, N.Y., June 15, 2011. A resident of Altamont, N.Y., he was born Jan. 14, 1932, in New York City, raised and educated in Pleasantville, N.Y., and received a master’s degree in wildlife management from Cornell University in 1955.
After two years in the army as a signal corps cryptographer, he served as a wildlife biologist in Maine and in 1961 left to become a big game project leader for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. In his career, Nate wrote numerous technical papers and authored Common Sense Wildlife Management. He also served as assistant editor of the New York Fish and Game Journal and proudly served on the board of the Property Rights Foundation of America.
With a lifelong love of baseball, Nate became a member of Red Sox Nation and a passionate coach and teacher of the game. He was varsity coach at Schalmont High School for many years.
Nate is survived by his wife, Ruth Snow Dickinson, their three children and seven grandchildren. A staunch conservative, he considered himself a true conservationist and loved the career he chose in wildlife management.
