 "I am really haunted by the fact that whenever I go to Monticello and see Jefferson's things, I am drawn in again and again by his sense of beauty, his love of knowledge and his intellectual charisma...It's painful to encounter the fact that those beautiful things go hand in hand with cruelty, you don't want that to be true. That problem, is beauty related to cruelty, is a really haunting question and it doesn't just relate to Jefferson."

Erica Ehrenberg '00 is a poet and teacher. She was a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford University, a poetry fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and a writer-in-residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. She has also been a poetry fellow at the Vermont Studio Center.  Her poems have appeared in journals and anthologies including Slate, The New Republic, Octopus, Jubilat, The St. Ann's Review, and Everyman's Library Poetry series from Knopf. She currently teaches at Fordham University and with the Stanford Online Writer's Studio.
