Walter J. Pfizenmayer '44

Walter died of pancreatic cancer on May 6, 2007, at the Lincoln Home in Newcastle, Me.  He had been born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1921 and had lived in Newcastle for many years.

He attended St. Paul’s Prep School in Garden City, Long Island, before coming to Amherst.  At Amherst, he was a member of Chi Phi and of the all-victorious football squad of 1942.  He served in WWII, and after the war, he had many interests.  He taught and coached on Long Island, sharing lessons with youngsters of football, wildlife conservation, the history of American presidents (particularly Theodore Roosevelt), travel and storytelling, in which he often acted out with no understatement, the roles he was describing.

Walter is survived by his wife, Joyce; four children; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
