2003/2004: Fall/Winter Johnson Chapel Associate Profile

Orrin Lincoln, proudly pictured here with granddaughter Emma, Class of 2002, anchors a wonderful Amherst family. Orrin’s son Ed, Emma’s dad, graduated in 1971.

The family’s involvement with Amherst began in 1934, when, as a resident of nearby Greenfield, Orrin came to campus for an interview with Dean Charles Scott Porter. Clearly, Orrin made an impression, since the result was a nearly full scholarship. Enjoying the many great professors of his time, including Sprague, Soller, Whicher, Morton and Salmon, Orrin majored in mathematics and physics.

His quantitative skills landed him a job with the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark, N.J., where he started in the actuarial department. In 1978, after 40 years with Prudential, Orrin retired, having risen to the position of vice president of administration.

Active with his community and class, Orrin has served Amherst in a variety of ways, most recently as president of the Class of 1938, whose 65th Reunion occurred last spring. Orrin’s dedication and organizational skills contributed greatly to the Reunion’s success. As a bonus, he was also able to enjoy that happy time with his granddaughter, as shown in this photo.
