Beneski Museum of Natural History, Paino Lecture Hall (Room 107)

Dr. Niki Kasumi Clements of Rice University examines the history of madness, depression and mental illness and considers the cultural scripts that shape the experience of depression from antiquity to the present. In the process, she challenges narratives about progress from superstition to enlightenment and assertions that modern medical approaches to mental illness are more humanizing, in order to open up conversations about supporting individuals experiencing mental illness.
