Alexander George was born and bred in Manhattan. His education began at the Lycée Français de New York.  Thereafter, Columbia, Harvard, and Oxford. It continues.

He launched The Amherst Lecture in Philosophy and its associated eponymous e-periodical. He also set up the educational website AskPhilosophers.org, a public service on the part of philosophers. The website has spawned a couple of books which have been published internationally (see here for more information), proceeds from whose sales have been donated to the AskPhilosophers Fund, a companion charitable organization that supports educational endeavors.

George was elected the Romanell-Phi Beta Kappa Professor of Philosophy for 2011-12. He is currently the Rachel and Michael Deutch Professor of Philosophy at Amherst College.  His website is alexandergeorge.net

Research Interests

George’s main philosophical interests track the concerns of two of the greatest figures in the Analytic Tradition, the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and the American philosopher W.V. Quine.  These include questions about mind, language, and mathematics.

Teaching Interests

His focus in teaching happily mirrors George’s research interests: courses on logic, mathematics, language, and the works of seminal figures in the Analytic Tradition.  He has also been known to teach a mean introductory course.
