Bioscience Symposium Schedule

3 p.m.  Opening remarks. George W. Carmany, III, '62, moderator. Mr. Carmany is an investor in health care in Boston, the former chairman of the Tufts Medical Center and a member of the Advisory Committee on Education at the Harvard Medical School.

3:10 p.m.  Dr. Gerald Fink, '62,  professor of genetics at MIT, is a founding member of the Whitehead Institute and its former director. He will discuss current developments in the field that has popularly become known as "personalized medicine."

3:50 p.m.  Dr. Paula Rauch '77, a college trustee, maintains a child psychiatry practice at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. "Supporting a Child's Resilience: One Career in Child Psychiatry;" Dr. Rauch will discuss the treatment of children whose parents suffer from serious illnesses. She will also share her thoughts on how a career in medicine can evolve along with the physician.

4:30 p.m.  Dr. Rajiv D. Desai '84, the director of the Neuroscience Institute at the Maine Medical Center, will discuss the development of his career and his clinical interests, "The evolution of the patient physician relationship." Dr. Desai will also address the evolving relationship between patients and physicians and how technology plays an increasing role in the provision of care.

5:10 p.m.  Dr. Kimberlee Wyche-Etheridge '87, the medical services director for Family, Youth and Infant Care for the City of Nashville, will discuss the manner in which environmental factors influence the long-term health and well-being of disadvantaged populations.

5:50 p.m. Dr. Fink and George Daley discuss the relative merits of the M.D. track versus the M.D./PhD. track.

6:15 p.m.  Dinner. Lewis Sebring Dining Commons.

7:30 p.m. "Stem Cells: battles, breakthroughs, myths and medicines." A talk by Dr. George Q. Daley.  Dr. Daley is a nationally distinguished stem cell research scientist and is an investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He and Dr. Rauch are members of the faculty of the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Daley will address the current state of stem cell research, touching on both the promise and disappointments that arise while working in the field.
