The Department of Art and the History of Art awards up to three prizes each spring. All art submissions are due Friday, April 12th by 12:00pm. Items should be dropped off at Fayerweather 107 for submission. In addition to actual art projects, photos of each submission is required and should be sent to finearts@amherst.edu. Essays and dissertations may be submitted electronically to finearts@amherst.edu

The Athanasios Demetrios Skouras Prize

The Athanasios Demetrios Skouras Prize is given in memory of Athanasios Demetrios Skouras, class of 1936, who died in 1943 in Athens as a result of Nazi reprisal killings. It is awarded to an Amherst College student who, in the opinion of the Department, has created an outstanding work of art or architecture.

All works submitted for this prize, with the exception of thesis work, must be clearly labeled as such and should be brought to the department coordinator in room 107 Fayerweather Hall. In addition, photos of the work need to be sent electronically to finearts@amherst.edu.

The Hasse Prize

The Hasse Prize, established in memory of Adrian H. Hasse, class of 1943, is awarded to an Amherst student sketch in pencil, charcoal, or watercolor for the best submitted work using the human figure as a theme.

All works submitted for this prize, with the exception of thesis work, must be clearly labeled as such and should be brought to the department coordinator in room 107 Fayerweather Hall. In addition, photos of the work need to be sent electronically to finearts@amherst.edu.

The Anna Baker Heap Prize

The Anna Baker Heap Prize, established by Arnold N. Heap, class of 1873, is given annually to a member of the senior class for the best essay or dissertation on the subject of “Art”

Substantial essays written specifically for this prize will be considered. All essays should be submitted electronically to finearts@amherst.edu.

The History of Art Prize

The History of Art Prize will be awarded to an undergraduate student who has submitted an outstanding essay or written work of any kind (including research papers) on the history of art.

The Practice of Art Prize

This prize will be awarded to an undergraduate student for an outstanding work of art created in the past year. The prize is open to all major and non-major undergraduate students who have taken an ARHA course. All media and formats are welcome. Submission of innovative and collaborative work is encouraged. An award for a collaborative work will be split equally among the collaborators. 

All works submitted for this prize must be clearly labeled as such and should be brought to the department coordinator in room 107 Fayerweather Hall. In addition, photos of the work need to be sent electronically to finearts@amherst.edu. If it is not possible to submit the work physically (installation art, performance, video), electronic documentation alone is sufficient
