Antonis Samaras’ victory as the leader of Greece’s New Democracy conservative opposition party came just weeks after former Amherst roommate George Papandreou ’75 was elected the country’s prime minister. Stories about Samaras’ win and his relationship with Papandreou appeared in various national and international media outlets, including AthensPlus, a newsweekly published by The International Herald Tribune and Kathimerini SA.

A reviewer wrote glowingly of She Turned on the Light, a one-woman production written by Wendy Woodson of the college’s Theater and Dance Department and performed by Marina Libel ’01. Also involved in the play are Amherst’s Suzanne Dougan, set and costume creator, and Kathy Couch ’95, lighting designer.

Austin Sarat was honored with the Hugo A. Bedau Award from Massachusetts Citizens Against the Death Penalty and the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service at an awards ceremony in Boston on Oct. 28. Interested in learning more about his work on capital punishment? Participate in the first of the college’s new Amherst Telephone Lecture Series, featuring Sarat on Nov. 19 at noon EST. Dr. F. Sessions Cole’s famed newborn intensive care unit at St. Louis Children’s Hospital was hailed in a lengthy article as “one of the biggest, busiest and most technically advanced in the country” and “in the forefront of ‘family-centered care.’”

In response to a call for first-person essays describing how the recession is affecting young people today, Ophelia Hu ’12 recounted her activities canvassing for the poverty organization Save the Children, in a piece titled “Save the Children, in Zimbabwe and at Home.” The essay earned Hu a finalist nod from the magazine’s editors.

The two donations, from separate anonymous alumni, will support the college’s efforts to provide the finest possible undergraduate education and access to it. The gifts are the largest in the history of Amherst and generated coverage in the Associated Press and other media outlets across the country.
