Through experiments conducted at Amherst, an international research team led by Hall, the Paula R. and David J. Avenius 1941 Professor of Physics, has created and observed a new class of vortices (tiny whirlpools) in an ultracold gas. Yixin “Arthur” Xiao ’19 is the lead author of their study, published in Nature Communications.

A Family Takes Action to Prepare Amherst Students for the Future

Established in 2021 by Beth and Mike Shogren ’89, in partnership with their son Bobby Shogren ’19 and Beth’s father, Fred Moon ’64, the Sustainability and Climate Change Initiatives Fund was developed around a common concern for the environment and a shared belief in the College’s potential to be a leader in the field.
Presidential Scholar Jason Moran to Teach and Perform on Campus
The 2022–23 Presidential Scholars series begins this month with a visit from celebrated jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran. In addition to class visits and master classes, Moran will present James Reese Europe and the Harlem Hellfighters: The Absence of Ruin in Buckley Recital Hall on Sept. 23. Moran’s multidisciplinary program features his Bandwagon bandmates—bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits—plus a seven-piece horn section, contributions from artist/writer/filmmaker John Akomfrah and visual materials from acclaimed cinematographer Bradford Young. The concert is free and open to the public; registration is required.
