James A. Towson (1921–2013)

Amherst College notes the passing of James A. Towson on May 14, 2013. Towson worked as a general mechanic and refrigerator mechanic at the college from 1968 until his retirement in 1983.

Ivone Barriga (d. 2013)

It is with sadness that we note the sudden passing of Merle Ivone Barriga Ramirez, Five College Fellow in our Theater and Dance Department, on April 11, 2013. She had been at Amherst College since July 2012.

Pema Tsering Memorial Gathering

The Campus Community was invited to a Memorial Gathering to celebrate and remember the life of Pema Tsering, an employee of the Custodial Department at Amherst College since 2004. The Memorial Gathering took place on Thursday, April 11, 2013 in the O’Connor Commons and was followed by a reception.

Dear Members of the Amherst College Community:

We write with news of the tragic and untimely death this morning of one of our beloved custodians, Pema Tsering, who had been at the College since 2004.

Pema will be missed by everyone who knew him and all of us who benefitted from his work, his collegiality, and his generosity. He was a man of deep faith, whose positive energy and spirit enriched lives of the people around him. His commitment to his family and to his position at the College was an inspiration.

Carl Schmalz Jr. (1926–2013)

Amherst College notes the passing of Carl Schmalz Jr., professor of fine arts, emeritus, on Feb. 22, 2013. Schmalz taught at Amherst from 1962 until his retirement in 1994.

Nancy R. Board (1949–2013)

Amherst College notes the passing of Nancy R. Board on Jan. 30, 2013. Board came to the college in 1991 as secretary to the treasurer. Over the course of her career, she also worked in the  Departments of Philosophy and Black Studies. Most recently, she was editorial assistant on The American Mathematical Monthly. She retired in 2011.

Joseph Ablow (1928–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of Joseph Ablow on Nov. 14, 2012. Ablow, a renowned painter and teacher, was a visiting professor for 1975-76 and a visiting artist-in-residence for the fall semester of 2003.

Stanley E. Seymour (1915–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired employee Stanley E. Seymour on Nov. 10, 2012. Seymour worked for the college as a groundsman and as a truck driver from 1953 until his retirement in 1981. His wife, Ruth (Eaton) Seymour, who passed away in 2008, worked in the college’s Mailing Center from 1970 to 1979.

Amy Olney Johnson (1922–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired employee Amy Olney Johnson on Sept. 8, 2012. Johnson served as assistant dean of admissions from 1979 to 1985 and as associate dean of admissions from 1985 until her retirement in 1992.

Deene D. Clark (1931–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of The Rev. Dr. Deene D. Clark on Sept. 5, 2012. After 20 years in parish ministry, Clark came to the college on Aug. 25, 1985, as the assistant dean of students and assistant director of the Career Center. In August of 1986, he became the assistant director of career counseling and the Protestant religious advisor. In 1989, the former title was updated to Associate Director of Career Counseling, and in 1994, the latter title became Coordinator of Religious Affairs. Clark retired from the college on Jan. 1, 2000.

Irene Rothberg (1913–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of Irene Rothberg on May 30, 2012. Rothberg came to the college in 1977 as department secretary and assistant to the chair of the Department of Theater and Dance, and she worked there until her retirement in 1997.

Donald S. Pitkin (1922–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of Professor Emeritus of Anthropology Donald S. Pitkin on May 11, 2012. Pitkin introduced anthropology to the Amherst curriculum when he joined the faculty in 1964. He retired from the college in 1992.

Elizabeth J. LaValle (d. 2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of Elizabeth J. LaValle on April 10, 2012. LaValle worked as a custodian at the college from 1982 until her retirement in 1997.

Paul Herrmann (1955–2012)

Amherst College notes the passing of Paul Herrmann on Saturday, January 28, 2012. Mr. Herrmann was the husband of Alice Herrmann, administrative assistant of the Annual Fund.

Calling hours will be held Friday, Feb. 3, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield, with services at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Candi Ashenden officiating. An obituary with more information is available here.
