Harrison L. Gregg (d. 2018)

Amherst College notes the passing of College retiree Harrison L. Gregg on April 2, 2018. Gregg first came to the College in 1980, as a junior programmer in the Three Colleges Computing Center. He later worked as a senior programmer, systems analyst and program manager, before moving to the Institutional Research office in 1995. in 2005, Gregg became the associate registrar and worked in that role until his retirement in 2010. After retirement, Gregg continued his service, working as a guide at the Emily Dickinson Museum.

Christopher Collins ’20 (1997-2018)

The Amherst College community mourns the loss of Christopher Collins ’20, of Wakefield, R.I., who passed away on March 29, 2018. He was a mathematics major and a former member of Amherst’s baseball team. A campus gathering was held on March 30 to remember Chris and to provide support for his friends and family.

“Chris was loved for his thoughtfulness and kindness, his genuine curiosity about others, and his love of family, friends, music, baseball and writing, among many other qualities,” President Biddy Martin noted in an email to the community.

Andrew Dorogi ’18 (1996-2018)

The Amherst College community mourns the loss of Andrew Dorogi ’18, who passed away on March 16, 2018, in Mexico. Andrew came to Amherst from Cleveland, Ohio, and was an economics major and a member of the football team. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, teammates, coaches and teachers. For those seeking solace and community, the College hosted a campus-only event on the evening of March 19 for attendees to share their remembrances of Andrew. In addition, Chapin Chapel will be open for prayer and meditation, the Counseling Center will offer expanded services, and coaches, counselors and student affairs are available for those needing support, sympathy or companionship. Cards and message boards have also been positioned at several spots on campus for anyone wishing to leave thoughts, memories and condolences. 

Barbara Wilda (1944-2017)

Amherst College notes the passing of College retiree Barbara Wilda on Nov. 9, 2017. Wilda was hired in 1990 as a server in Valentine Dining Hall and worked there through her retirement in 2007.

Mary Carlson (1936-2017)

Amherst College notes the passing of retiree Mary Carlson on Sept. 16, 2017. Carlson first came to the College in 1978 and worked as a staff assistant and admissions specialist in the Admission Office. She retired in 2005.

Lorraine F. (Roy) Tully (d. 2017)

Amherst College notes the passing of retiree Lorraine Tully on March 25, 2017, in Holyoke. Tully came to the College in 1978 as the secretary to the librarian and became the library's business manager in 2008. She retired from the College in 2010.

Francis "Jim" Osborn (d. 2016)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired employee Francis "Jim" Osborn on Dec. 13, 2016. He was 85. Mr. Osborn came to the College in 1959 and worked as a custodian until his retirement in 1994.

Elizabeth M. "BettyAnn" Kelly (1926-2016)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired employee Elizabeth M. "BettyAnn" Kelly on Dec. 9, 2016. Ms. Kelly came to the College in 1977 as a slides curator in the fine arts department. In 1983, she became the fine arts librarian, and in 1987, she combined that position with head of circulation. Ms. Kelly retired in 1996.

John "Jack" Pemberton (1928-2016)

Amherst College notes the passing of John "Jack" Pemberton, the Stanley Warfield Crosby Professor of Religion, Emeritus, on Nov. 30, 2016. Pemberton came to the College in 1958 and retired in 1998.

Robert J. Joy (1931-2016)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired staff member Robert J. Joy on Nov. 15, 2016. Joy came to the College in 1968, working part-time in the Special Functions department. He continued there and in Dining Services on a casual basis until 1988, when he took a full-time position as a server. He retired in 1993.

Cora Lee Gibbs (1924-2016)

Amherst College notes the passing of Cora Lee Gibbs on Sept. 29, 2016. She was the wife of Julian Gibbs ’46, who served as president of the College from 1979 until his death in 1983. Mrs. Gibbs was a lecturer and public program developer at the Mead Art Museum and created the “Art for Lunch” program. She received Amherst’s Medal for Eminent Service in 1984.

Juanita Kocik (1934–2016)

Amherst College notes the passing of retired staff member Juanita Kocik on July 11, 2016. Kocik worked as a housekeeper in the President’s house from 1975 through her retirement in 1998.
