Leeta Bailey (1935–2014)

Amherst College notes the passing of Leeta Bailey on July 29, 2014. She worked at the Frost Library from 1978 to 1985 and from 1987 until her retirement in 1998. Her husband, Duane W. Bailey, professor of mathematics and astronomy at the college, passed away in 1998.

Alan Tower (d. 2014)

Amherst College notes the passing of Alan "Al" Tower on July 24, 2014. He worked as a dispatcher on campus from 2002 to 2008 and from 2010 until his death.

Barbara Tiffany (1919–2014)

Amherst College notes the passing of Barbara Tiffany on July 4, 2014. She came to the college's biology department as a research assistant in 1956 and worked in that position until her retirement in 2006 and for five more years as a casual employee. She is believed to have been the longest-serving employee in Amherst College history.

Robert Grose (1924–2014)

Amherst College notes the passing of Robert Freeman "Bob" Grose, professor emeritus of psychology, on May 11, 2014. He joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology in 1950 and went on to serve, at various times, as the college's recorder, registrar, director of institutional research and Affirmative Action officer before his retirement in 1992.

Hubbard M. Smith '57 (1935–2014)

Amherst College notes the passing of Hubbard M. (Hub) Smith '57 on May 8, 2014. He joined the staff of the college as assistant alumni secretary in 1985 and retired as associate director of development in 1995.

Gerald P. Brophy (1926–2014)

Amherst College notes the passing of Gerald P. Brophy, the Samuel A. Hitchcock Professor of Mineralogy and Geology, Emeritus, on April 2, 2014. He was appointed to the Amherst faculty in 1954 and retired in 1998.

Marian Matheson (d. 2014)

April 4, 2014

Amherst College mourns the loss of Marian Matheson, Director of Institutional Research and Planning, who passed away after a brief, courageous struggle with illness. She is survived by her wife, Pam, and their daughter, Caroline. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, in Johnson Chapel, with a reception to follow at the home of President Biddy Martin.

Lydia Beatrice Nampeera '15 (1993–2013)

The Amherst College community mourns the loss of Lydia Beatrice Nampeera '15, of  Poughkeepsie, N.Y., who passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at her home.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie. A college memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

George L. Shinn '45 (1923–2013)

Amherst College notes the passing of Life Trustee and Chair Emeritus George L. Shinn '45, P'85, G'07 on Dec. 16, 2013, in Scarborough, Maine. He was 90 years old.

An obituary ran on Dec. 17 in The New York Times.

Shinn became a member of the college's Board of Trustees in 1968 and was its chair from 1973 to 1980—the years during which Amherst began admitting female students.

Bekki Lee (1956–2013)

Amherst College notes the passing of Bekki Lee on Oct. 12, 2013. Lee served the Amherst community for 23 years in various roles in the Dean of Students' Office and the Career Center. Lee's husband, David Hansen, was Amherst's Deutch Professor of Chemistry. In 2009, Lee and her family moved to California, where she became dean of students and vice president of student affairs at Scripps College.

Angeline E. Schwartz (1920–2013)

Amherst College notes the passing of Angeline E. Schwartz on Aug. 2, 2013. Schwartz was secretary to the Department of History from 1970 until her retirement in 1983.

James A. Towson (1921–2013)

Amherst College notes the passing of James A. Towson on May 14, 2013. Towson worked as a general mechanic and refrigerator mechanic at the college from 1968 until his retirement in 1983.

Ivone Barriga (d. 2013)

It is with sadness that we note the sudden passing of Merle Ivone Barriga Ramirez, Five College Fellow in our Theater and Dance Department, on April 11, 2013. She had been at Amherst College since July 2012.
