December Move-out, December Closure, January Recess, and Spring Move-in
Dear Student,
It is time to begin preparing for the upcoming housing transitions. Please read the following information carefully and in its entirety, as you are responsible for the contents and your responses.
Key Dates
- Last day of classes: Wednesday, December 13, 2023
- Fall Move-out: by noon on Friday, December 22, 2023
- College Closed: beginning at 4 pm on Friday, December 22, 2023, through 9 am on Tuesday, January 2, 2024
- Spring Arrival Weekend: Saturday and Sunday, January 27 & 28, 2024
December Move-Out
All students must depart campus following finals by noon on Friday, December 22, 2023, unless explicitly approved to remain on campus. To submit a request for review to depart late, please complete the form in the Housing Portal by 9 am on December 11, 2023.
December Closure
The College is closed from 4 pm on Friday, December 22, 2023, until 9 am on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. All services will be limited during this time, including Dining, Custodial, and Student Affairs staffing. Campus residency during this time is limited to:
- Students who cannot return home due to international travel restrictions
- Students whose home of record is Amherst College
- Required in-season student-athletes
Eligibility is dependent on both fall and spring residency. Please complete the form in the Housing Portal before the end of classes on December 13, 2023.
January Recess
January Recess begins at 9 am on Tuesday, January 2, 2023, and concludes at the start of classes. During this time, residency is limited to the following groups:
- International students
- Students whose home of record is Amherst College
- Students engaged in faculty-approved academic work
- In-season winter student-athletes who resided in college housing during the fall semester
- Students employed on campus
- Participants in Loeb Center programs (including Trek and Sophomore Summit)
- ACEMS trainees
Eligibility depends on enrollment for the spring semester and confirmation of on-campus engagement by a faculty or staff member involved. Please complete the form in the Housing Portal by 9 am on December 11, 2023.
Spring Move-In
Students are welcome to return to campus on or after Saturday, January 27, 2024. Classes begin on Monday, January 29, 2024. In early January, we will ask you to share your arrival plans should you need to arrive after the start of classes. If you are enrolled in courses at Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, or Smith Colleges, we will contact you to develop an Early Arrival plan. Early arrival requests should be submitted in the Housing Portal by 9 am on Monday, January 15, 2024.

- 12/5/23 1:00 - 4:00 pm EST: Spring-only Housing Selection Process
- 12/23/23 - 1/1/24: College Closed
- 1/26/24: Move-in for students returning from leave
- 1/27/24 - 1/28/24: Regular move-in for spring students
- 1/29/24: Spring Classes Begin
- 5/16/24: Move-out by noon for non-graduating students (Corrected date: 5/18/24)
- 5/26/24: Move-out by 5 pm for graduating students
