We hope your semester is ending well!

Dear Student,

Move Out is upon us, and our campus partners in the Office of Sustainability need your help.

As your departure from campus begins, the Office of Sustainability would like to challenge students to be mindful of the items and belongings that are to be left behind. It may seem easy to throw these items away, but there is a growing reality that landfills are overwhelmed. Conveniently, there is also a need for many of the items that might be thought of as easily discarded. New students coming to campus each year find themselves in need of clothing items, shelves, lights, books, furniture, and much more.

As you pack up your rooms to Move Out, we are hoping to minimize the amount of waste headed to the landfill. To that end, the custodial staff will be providing you donation bags and tags for any items you would like to donate. These items will be gathered, organized, and put out for the Fall Move-In Yard Sale and Clothing Extravaganza so that they can have a second life!

  • One donation bag is intended for clothes donations. You can place any clothes you would like to donate into the bag and attach the provided "clothes donation" sticker to it.
  • A second bag is intended for all other donatable items from room decor to books to paper products to electronics to linens ... and anything else you think is still usable! You can place any items you would like to donate into the bag and attach the provided "Other Donatables" sticker to it.

All donation bags (clothes and other donatables) along with any larger room items you would like to donate (e.g., lamps, fans, storage bins, chairs, etc.) should be placed in the designated areas in the first floor common spaces. Drop spots are clearly marked with a "Place Donations Here" banner and will be open from the last day of classes through graduation.

As you put together what to donate, please be mindful of what you put in the bags.

Please do NOT include these items in the donation bags:

  • Anything that is unreasonably dirty
  • Trash
  • Any opened food items
  • Broken electronics (e.g., lamps, fans, clocks)
  • Liquids or gels that might leak. Make sure caps securely on

The Office of Sustainability can also store your bike over the summer and/or fall semester. If you'd like to drop off your bike, please come to the basement of Morrow Residence Hall (accessible via the east side/Val quad or via the elevator) during our drop off hours on May 15 from 2 - 5 PM. If you cannot meet us during this time, please reach out to treadshed@amherst.edu to schedule a new time.
