Chief John Carter

The Amherst College Police Department is a progressive, service oriented police department. The main goal of the department is to provide a safe and secure environment through our varied services. As with many police departments, we have been committed to community engagement efforts long before it became a national trend. The Police Department has strong ties with other Amherst College Departments such as the Office of Student Affairs, Facilities, and Health Services. In addition, the Police Department has open communication and strong collaborative relationships with the Town of Amherst Police and other municipal departments. As you tour our site, I wish to remind you our efforts to keep the campus safe are greatly enhanced with your assistance. The prevention of crime is the responsibility of everyone. Working together we can keep Amherst College a safe place.

John B. Carter
Chief of Police
