Michael Stephens – Amherst College’s Ombudsperson
I have served the College’s staff and faculty community since September 2015. During that time I’ve met with people from all over the campus, in a wide variety of departments and roles.
Prior to joining Amherst, I had many years of experience in human resources functions, employee relations, conflict resolution, ombudsperson services, facilitation and employee counseling. I worked for more than 25 years in various corporate settings, providing these services to employees and managers at all levels. I have a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Colorado and an M.B.A. from New York University.
What have I learned so far in working with the Amherst community?
- Just like in other organizations, even smart, hard-working people will sometimes have conflicts with each other.
- Some people I meet with have been struggling with a difficulty for quite some time.
- It’s not uncommon for people to feel that there are no workable options for a challenging situation they face.
- When I sit down with someone and assist him or her in thinking through the situation, we are almost always able to identify a number of ways to work with and improve the situation.

Although I report directly to the President, I work independently of all administrative and academic offices.
