Eid al-Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice) honors the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son as an act of submission to God's command. There is a famous tradition of slaughtering a sheep to commemorate the act of sacrifice. The meat from the sacrificed animal is preferred to be divided into three parts: one third for the family, one third to friends and neighbors and the final third to the poor and needy. On the morning of Eid al-Adha Muslims attend the special Eid prayer and the mosque and then spend the rest of day visiting family, friends and those in need.
